Welcome! I’m Ash Slemming,

the creative lead behind Do the Art Thing.
After more than a decade working across the arts and culture sector; as an artist, designer, writer, curator, and program facilitator;

I launched Do the Art Thing in Fall 2025.

My goal is simple: to draw on those 10+ years of experience to support projects with genuine passion, and to create a flexible space where creative goals can take shape and thrive.

I’ve always resisted the idea that creativity must fit into a single box or category. Instead, I use my range of skills in curating, writing, making, and strategizing to amplify projects in ways that honour their unique intentions and goals.

Now, I help artists, galleries, and institutions transform ideas into impactful projects, strategies, and experiences.

  • Artists & Creators — Clarify your artist statements, re-tune your artist biographies, build cohesive portfolios, learn steps on how to build more visibility for your work. Learn more.

  • Institutions & Galleries — Curatorial strategy, programming, audience engagement, exhibition direction. Learn more.

  • Communities & Small Audiences — Collaborative art events, and support in planning small-scale workshops. Learn more.

Don't forget it all starts with ideas, writing them down, and getting started! It's time to create beyond category, and do the art thing.

In the spirit of reconciliation, I acknowledge that I live, work, play, and learn on the ancestral territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksika, Kainai, Piikani), the Tsuut’ina, the Îyâxe Nakoda Nations, the Métis Nation (Districts 4, 5, and 6), and all people who make their homes in the Treaty 7 region of Southern Alberta. I am committed to continual learning and growth toward shared knowledge and understanding, and I hope to build a better world collaboratively alongside those who know the land and the earth intimately and relationally.
